Reminder: Bitcoin Pizza Day
May 22, 2010, also known as “Bitcoin Pizza Day,” was the day the first commercial Bitcoin transaction occurred. Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer from Florida, bought two Papa John's pizzas for 10,000 bitcoins, which at the time was worth about $40.
Haniecz told The Sun he doesn't regret it. “I think it’s great that I became part of the early history of Bitcoin in this way.”
He mined these bitcoins using his own program, which used a computer graphics card, and bought these pizzas because, to him, “it was free pizza.”
“I mean, I coded this thing and I mined Bitcoin, and I felt like I was winning on the internet that day,” he added.
Haniecz's pizza made him one of the inductees into the Cryptocurrency Hall of Fame. If he had held these bitcoins until today, they would now be worth about $440 million
