ConsenSys, the software development company behind the widely used MetaMask wallet, has just launched a public testnet called Linea for its long-awaited zkEVM product. zkEVM is ZK technology considered by many to be the most optimal solution to increase transaction speed and reduce gas fees for blockchains.

Previously, ConsenSys had only been running a private testnet for the zkEVM product since December last year, but the network had already conducted more than 350,000 transactions. In a blog post announcing the arrival of Linea, the development team said that "Linea represents the latest step in the evolution of ConsenSys zkEVM, delivering a new generation of decentralized applications built on Ethereum for the crypto space".

ConsenSys also tweeted that Linea will have a built-in MetaMask wallet and Truffle development kit for the network.

There have been many new developments in the Ethereum ecosystem's ZK space recently, as both Matter Labs and Polygon have announced their own zkEVM networks, bringing zkEVM closer to users.
