Crypto Speak: Layer 1

We recently broke down the concept of layer 0, and today we will find out what “layer-1” blockchains are.

A layer-1 blockchain is the core architecture of a blockchain system, which is the underlying network or core blockchain.

In other words, layer 1 is the foundation of each individual blockchain on which new networks can grow.

For example, Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana are layer-1 blockchains in their own right. They have their own architecture and cryptocurrency, but they can be used as the basis for layer-2 blockchains, which we will talk about another time.
