According to Cointelegraph, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin spoke about the importance of independent staking to Ethereum security and decentralization at the Ethereum Singapore conference on September 16, 2024.

Buterin discussed the risks posed by centralized entities and the role of independent stakers in protecting the network from attacks to ensure its long-term resilience and sustainability.

Solo stakers are individuals who stake their cryptocurrencies (like Ether) independently, without relying on third-party services, centralized entities, or staking pools.

Buterin emphasized that independent stakers are an uncoordinated and diverse group that reduces reliance on centralized entities, thereby enhancing decentralization.

He noted that even a small number of independent stakers could add an important layer of decentralization to Ethereum.

In terms of defending against 51% attacks, Buterin suggested that Ethereum should consider raising the block finalization threshold from two-thirds to a higher percentage to make the attack more difficult to pull off.

Additionally, Buterin recently supported Google’s automatic login feature on social media, and while he acknowledged the risks of such a service as a bridge to a secure system, he believes it’s worth a try.
