According to Odaily Planet Daily, the U.S. Department of Justice recently announced that 12 defendants were sentenced for participating in a series of violent home invasions to steal cryptocurrencies. Remy Ra St Felix from West Palm Beach, Florida, was sentenced to 47 years in prison for leading the incident. The crimes involved the theft of more than $3.5 million in digital assets across several states. St Felix and his accomplices used SIM card swaps to control the victim's phone number, accessed the cryptocurrency account, and then broke into the house to rob, tied up and threatened the victim with a gun to provide access to the computer and cryptocurrency trading account, thereby stealing cryptocurrency. The Department of Justice added that the conspirators laundered money through anonymity-enhanced cryptocurrencies, as well as "instant exchanges" and DEXs that do not conduct KYC. The main conspirator Seemungal was sentenced to 20 years in prison, 5 years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay $4,038,479.39 in restitution. Seemungal pleaded guilty on December 19, 2023 to stealing cryptocurrency by hacking the victim's cryptocurrency account and robbing the house. In total, nine accomplices received lengthy prison sentences for conspiracy to kidnap, and other key players were also punished for their involvement.
