The cryptocurrency investor known as "Bitcoin Jesus" is out on bail in Spain, where he faces extradition to the United States to face tax evasion charges, Bloomberg reports. U.S. authorities are seeking to extradite Ver to face tax evasion charges. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Ver failed to report capital gains on bitcoin he bought starting in 2011, or to pay taxes. In 2017, Ver sold about €240 million worth of bitcoin, but he allegedly did not tell his accountant about the transaction, so he allegedly failed to pay at least $48 million in taxes. Ver renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014 and became a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis, but he is still required to report gains on certain assets. Ver earned the nickname "Bitcoin Jesus" for his early advocacy for cryptocurrencies. He left the Bitcoin community over disagreements over how to change the functionality of the digital currency network. Ver's lawyer, Jaime Campaner, said: "Ver is not a fugitive because he has been in contact with U.S. authorities through his California lawyer. Therefore, he was aware of the investigation and I think his arrest is meaningless."
