According to BlockBeats, Mike Schmidt, co-founder of the non-profit organization Brink, has revealed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a subpoena requesting personal information of Bitcoin core developers who were active in 2022. The subpoena is reportedly linked to claims made by Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr, who stated that he lost approximately 216 BTC in a hacking incident.
Schmidt has stated that he is unaware of any specific details regarding the investigation, and it is unclear whether the subpoena is targeting a specific suspect or is part of a general information gathering process. He has provided the FBI with the names, surnames, GitHub usernames, and email addresses of the participants.
The FBI had initially requested Schmidt to not disclose the subpoena for a year, but the non-disclosure period has recently expired. Dashjr has claimed that due to a Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) key leak incident on December 31, 2022, he lost over 200 BTC, which was estimated to be worth around $3.3 million at the time. Based on current market value, the price of 200 BTC exceeds $14 million.
