According to Planet Daily, the 2022 tax investigation report released by Japan’s National Tax Administration (NTA) shows that a total of 615 cryptocurrency-related investigations were launched in fiscal year 2022, and 548 tax violation cases were discovered, a significant increase from the previous fiscal year. In fiscal year 2021, the NTA launched 444 cryptocurrency-related investigations and discovered 405 violations. However, the value of cryptocurrency-related tax violations appears to have declined, possibly due to the decline in global cryptocurrency prices. The NTA added that the average amount of undeclared income in cryptocurrency-related cases in fiscal year 2022 was approximately $206,000, down from $245,000 in fiscal 2021. The cumulative value of unreported income for fiscal year 2022 is $126.5 million.
