Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) has made a groundbreaking move by including Binance Coin (BNB), Bitcoin (BTC), and Ethereum (ETH) in its strategic reserves.¹ ² ³ This decision makes GMC one of the first jurisdictions globally to officially integrate digital assets into its reserve strategy.
The GMC's approach prioritizes digital assets with high market capitalizations and deep liquidity, ensuring they can be easily traded with minimal price impact. The region also intends to recognize assets issued on mature and secure blockchains that allow for robust monitoring of on-chain transactions.
This move is part of Bhutan's broader efforts to develop a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework for digital asset financial services. The GMC Law No. 1 of 2024, enacted on December 26, 2024, established a regulatory framework for companies offering digital asset-related financial services within GMC.
The inclusion of BNB, BTC, and ETH in GMC's strategic reserves is expected to enhance the region's economic resilience and promote blockchain adoption. The move has been welcomed by the crypto community, with Binance co-founder Changpeng "CZ" Zhao hailing it as a "major milestone for blockchain adoption".
