Pump-and-Dump Schemes: With low volume, it is easier for groups of traders to artificially inflate the price ("pump") in order to sell their holdings at a profit ("dump"), which leads to a sharp price drop.
"Fake-Outs": An apparent breakout to the upside could be triggered by low volume and quickly collapse again, as there is no real buying interest behind it.
