Mercedes-Benz is developing a solar paint that could transform the electric vehicle (EV) industry. This thin photovoltaic (PV) coating, applied like a paste, is just 5 micrometers thick—about the width of a human hair.

The coating can cover up to 11 square meters of a vehicle's surface, generating enough energy to power the car for up to 7,456 miles annually in ideal conditions. It includes a protective nanoparticle layer that lets 94% of solar energy pass through, making it highly efficient at 20%.

The energy generated feeds into the car’s high-voltage battery, even when the car is off, improving range and reducing the need for frequent charging. This solar paint can be applied to any vehicle surface, regardless of shape or angle, and weighs just 50 grams per square meter—making it a perfect addition to EV design for longer battery life.
