After discussing this issue with my wife, as long as you can accept that your child will only be able to work as a delivery person, a supermarket cashier, or at McDonald's, or doing manual labor in construction when they grow up, then you are completely free to exit this arms race. The problem is that a group of Chinese parents trembles at the thought of their children possibly becoming cashiers or delivery workers in the future, as if doing such jobs would lead them straight to hell. They go to great lengths to avoid this fate, which naturally results in their children becoming more and more competitive and increasingly lacking in boundaries. All parents raise the whip and frantically beat their children to ensure they do not end up as delivery workers or cashiers, saying, 'It's all for your own good!' Even more hellish is the fact that no matter how hard parents whip their children, a portion will ultimately end up as delivery workers or cashiers anyway, and it would be better if they hadn't whipped them at all.
