Beijing time November 5, 13:00 (Eastern time November 5, 00:00): Voters in two small towns in New Hampshire are the first to cast their votes.
From Beijing time November 5, 19:00 (Eastern time November 5, 6:00): Polling stations in most states in the US gradually open, especially in states on the East Coast, and the election begins.
From Beijing time November 6, 8:00-11:00 (Eastern time November 5, 19:00-22:00): Polling stations in various states begin to gradually close, and the ballot counting process is initiated. Polling stations in 7 swing states that have a decisive impact on the election results also close within this time frame, with Georgia and North Carolina being the states with preliminary results available the soonest. Media organizations begin to report and predict the winners in certain states based on the counting results.
After Beijing time November 6, 12:00 (after Eastern time November 5, 23:00): As more states' counting results are released, the national election results gradually become clear. However, if the election remains tight, it may require a longer wait.
Closing times for polling stations in swing states:
Georgia: Beijing time November 6, 08:00
North Carolina: Beijing time November 6, 08:30
Pennsylvania: Beijing time November 6, 09:00
Michigan: This state covers two time zones, so most areas of the state will begin reporting results at Beijing time November 6, 09:00, while some voters in the Upper Peninsula will continue voting until Beijing time 10:00.
Wisconsin: Beijing time November 6, 10:00
Arizona: Beijing time November 6, 10:00 (Results will be released one hour after all polling stations close or after all precincts report results)
Nevada: Beijing time November 6, 11:00 (Results will be announced only after the last voter in line has cast their vote, so historically there will be a waiting period between the closing of polling stations and the first results being published)
Key dates to watch after Election Day:
November 6 to December 11: States certify election results.
December 17: The Electoral College meets to cast official ballots.
January 6, 2025: The US Congress meets to count and certify the electoral votes.
January 20, 2025: The elected President of the United States is officially sworn in.
