Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a long-term vision of reaching 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) across Ethereum's layer 1 (L1) and layer 2 (L2) networks.

Vitalik Buterin Sets Ambitious 100,000 Transactions Per Second Target for Ethereum’s Staking-Focused Scaling Roadmap

Buterin explained this goal in a blog post published today, stressing that the scaling roadmap focused on staking will remain at the core of Ethereum’s strategy but will require further refinement.

Buterin described the next phase of the roadmap as “the breakthrough,” which focuses on completing the vision of rolling scalability while maintaining the power, decentralization, and security of Level 1.

“Our mission is to complete the roadmap focused on staking and solving these issues while maintaining the robustness and decentralization that makes Ethereum L1 special,” Buterin wrote.

In addition to the ambitious 100,000 TPS goal, other key goals include:

  • Maintaining decentralization and security on the Ethereum mainnet

  • Maximize interoperability between different Layer 2 networks

  • Ensuring scalability for emerging, high-volume, low-value applications

Buterin noted that despite recent updates like Dencun, Ethereum still lacks the speed needed to support intensive user applications.

The main improvement is in sampling data availability, allowing nodes to validate data without downloading the entire thing, improving speed and efficiency.

Buterin has set a medium-term goal of achieving 16MB of bandwidth per socket, which could enable Ethereum to process up to 58,000 TPS.

This is a big jump from the current 375KB per socket for staking operations, but Buterin acknowledged that even this level of throughput may not be enough for sectors like consumer payments or decentralized social media.

For these high-volume applications, Buterin proposed revisiting Plasma, a scalable solution where operators send blocks off-chain and record Merkle roots on-chain.
