#可持续性 is a broad theme that encompasses many areas of environmental, economic and social development. To date, work to define its boundaries has been slow and meaningful progress has been limited.
The United Nations has defined 17 areas of action under its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ranging from poverty alleviation to clean energy, sustainable cities and protecting life on land. While some global treaties, notably the 2015 Paris Agreement, have inspired action, this is still not enough. Given the enormous scope of the challenge, it is clear that this challenge requires a novel approach.
We all understand the need for sustainable living – metals are finite, resources are limited and pollution directly affects our health through the food chain. So how do we move beyond the government and corporate-led model and inspire the eight billion people on the planet? How do we visualize, encourage and reward individual efforts that pursue collective improvement?
