The U.S. government recently seized #Bitcoin and Tether linked to the North Korean Lazarus Group, a hacking group responsible for stealing nearly $879 million through various cyberattacks between 2021 and 2022. The Lazarus Group, known for its connections to North Korea’s military, is accused of carrying out several high-profile crypto heists, including attacks on entities in the U.S., Singapore, and Japan.

Among the assets seized are approximately $1.7 million in Tether and 15.5 Avalanche-bridged Bitcoin (worth around $971,000), which were linked to the group’s involvement in the hacks of platforms such as the Deribit exchange and Stake.com. The group utilized crypto mixers like Tornado Cash to launder stolen funds, converting Ethereum into stablecoins and moving the assets across blockchain bridges. U.S. authorities managed to trace and freeze a portion of these funds as they moved through various laundering stages.

This seizure is part of a broader effort to crack down on the group's operations, which include numerous crypto hacks, such as the WazirX hack in 2024, further linking the Lazarus Group to major crypto thefts worldwide
