SERNAC SUES WORLDCOIN FOR ILLEGAL BIOMETRIC COLLECTION

Grupo Optimistic SpA risks fines of up to $60 million.

After an intense investigation into Worldcoin, a company dedicated to scanning people's irises in exchange for money, the National Consumer Service (Sernac) officially sued the company for the improper collection of people's biometric data.

Likewise, Sernac comments through a statement that "a series of irregularities were detected in the collection of biometric data from natural persons, without having adequately informed about the use and treatment of said information."

Given the formal presentation of the complaint to Grupo Optimistic SpA, the company risks fines that can reach $20 million pesos for each case, which would exceed $60 million pesos.

In addition, Sernac will also request the end of this conduct and the suspension of operations until these actions are resolved judicially.

Key points of the complaint

Biometric data collection:

“Using devices called “Orb” installed in public places, people have been encouraged to scan their irises in exchange for cryptocurrencies, without transparently reporting the future uses of this data.”

Fraud of consumer rights:

“The complaint highlights that the company has not provided sufficient information to consumers about the purposes of storing their biometric data, the possible risks and the foreign entities that could have access to this information.”
