With September now behind us, a surprising amount of old bitcoins were moved last month—250 BTC from January and February 2009 were spent for the first time in nearly 16 years. During the month, a total of 4,066.81 BTC were moved from dormant bitcoin addresses created between 2009 and 2017. At current exchange rates, these once-silent bitcoins are worth about $257 million.

Bitcoin's September Resurgence: 4,066 Bitcoins Moved, Including 250 Bitcoins from 2009

September saw a surge in activity in the classic coin, with 4,066.81 BTC spent in 70 transactions, according to btcparser.com. Leading the way were wallets from 2016, which recorded 12 transactions, moving a total of 1,883.46 BTC. The largest of these was a significant transfer of 1,350.27 BTC on September 4. In second place, addresses created in 2013 saw a total of 722.87 BTC spent.

For 2013 wallets, there were 16 separate transactions, the largest of which was a 146.43 BTC transaction on September 9. Not far behind, 2017 wallets spent 512.9 BTC across 17 different transactions in September. In fourth place were addresses from 2014, which moved 312.21 BTC in nine transactions.

Finally, the mysterious 2009 addresses made their move, moving 250 BTC. This was the first such spend since April 7-8, 2022, when another entity moved the same amount. What was the main difference in 2022? No 2010 UTXOs were spent in April 2022, but there was one transaction last month. Dormant bitcoin wallets from 2015 took sixth place, with 236.38 BTC spent in seven transactions.

There was also a single transfer from 2010 of 50 BTC, as well as a transfer from 2011 of the same amount. Addresses from 2012 appeared twice last month, moving a total of 48.99 BTC. The 4,066.81 BTC spent from long-dormant wallets in September surpassed August's total of 2,291.20 BTC but was still below the 6,536.17 BTC spent in July and the 4,681.438 BTC transferred in June.
