🚨 Warning! Fake WalletConnect App Steals $70K from 150 Victims on Google Play 🚨
- WalletConnect recently alerted crypto users to a fake app that had been sitting on the Google Play Store.
- In a September 29 post on X, they revealed that the app had been removed, but not before stealing over $70,000 from unsuspecting users. 😱
- The app was first detected on September 26 by Check Point Research (CPR), which reported that the fake app had been masquerading as a legitimate crypto tool for over five months.
- The app was downloaded over 10,000 times, but fortunately, many users had not connected their wallets to it.
- CPR also found that the app used sophisticated social engineering techniques, including fake reviews and branding, to boost its visibility.
- WalletConnect cautions that they do not have an official app and urges users to remain vigilant.
