Orion prototype glasses made a shocking debut, Huang Renxun had a surprise experience

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, held its annual "Meta Connect Conference" on September 25 and released a number of eye-catching products. Among them, the one that attracted the most attention was the debut of the AR glasses prototype "Orion". NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang also made a surprise appearance in the event video to experience Orion in person and was full of praise for its lightweight design and technical performance.

Orion uses a fully transparent lens design, allowing users to directly view the real world and interact through holograms. The entire pair of glasses weighs only 98 grams, is equipped with an advanced AR display (using Micro LED) and a customized chip, and has 7 micro cameras and sensors embedded in the frame and temples. In particular, Meta uses silicon carbide instead of glass to make lenses, and the projection method uses uLED technology, which can perfectly combine virtual content with the real world.

After experiencing it, Huang Renxun said that Orion is not only light in weight, but also performs well in aspects such as brightness, color contrast, and field of view. His huge appreciation adds even more luster to Orion. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that although Orion is not yet ready to be launched, it is close to completion and will be used as a development toolkit in the future to work with partners to promote the comprehensive application of AR technology.

Open source Llama 3.2 model: New impetus for AI development

At this conference, Meta also released a new version of the AI model Llama 3.2, which is a multi-modal large-scale language model with powerful image and language integration capabilities. Llama 3.2 can not only process text, but also understand images and generate corresponding text descriptions, further improving image recognition and interpretation capabilities. What’s even more striking is that some versions can run on smartphones, meaning users can have private, local AI interactions without needing to connect to the cloud.

Llama 3.2 is available in multiple versions, including models with 1B, 3B, 11B, and 90B parameters. Among them, the small models (1B and 3B) are optimized for efficiency and speed and are suitable for execution on mobile devices; the large models (11B and 90B) have powerful text and image processing capabilities and can perform complex tasks, such as analyzing charts and generating Image description etc.

In order to promote the widespread application of Llama 3.2, Meta has cooperated with multiple hardware manufacturers, including Qualcomm, MediaTek and Arm, to ensure that Llama 3.2 can be seamlessly integrated with mobile chips. In addition, cloud service providers such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure also provide real-time access to the model.

Quest 3S and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses: further enriching the product line

In addition to Orion and Llama 3.2, Meta also launched a new affordable head-mounted AR device, the Quest 3S, and an upgraded version of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The pre-order price of Quest 3S is US$319.99 (approximately NT$10,140) on the official Taiwan website. It is positioned in the mid-range market and offers 128GB and 256GB storage options with a battery life of up to 2.5 hours.

Meta emphasizes that Quest 3S is a computer device with multi-tasking and application running capabilities, rather than a simple gaming machine.

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses received an upgrade at this conference, supporting Meta AI voice commands and adding real-time language translation and other functions. Users no longer need to use "Hey Meta" to wake up the voice assistant. They can also use the memory reminder function to track parking locations, set reminders or send voice messages. The new glasses also feature a Shiny Transparent Wayfarer frame with a transparent design, allowing users to showcase the built-in technology.
