According to the latest report from Immunefi, a vulnerability bounty platform, a total of $409 million in hacker thefts occurred in the cryptocurrency field in the third quarter of 2024, and another $3 million was lost due to fraud. This figure is 40% less than the same period in 2023.

Immunefi noted that funds locked in DeFi protocols provide "unparalleled and attractive opportunities" for hackers.

DefiLlama data shows that the total locked value (TVL) of DeFi currently reaches 87.2 billion US dollars.

The biggest losses this quarter came from attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges, with India's WazirX losing $235 million and Singapore's BingX losing $52 million. The other 32 hacking incidents accounted for 32% of the total losses.

Immunefi founder and CEO Mitchell Amador said that the number of DeFi attacks has increased, and although CeFi has fewer incidents, the single loss is often more serious.

The Ethereum blockchain was the most common target of hackers, with 15 thefts reported, while BNB Chain had eight and Base had two.
