PayPal announced on September 25 that PayPal Business accounts can now buy, sell and trade cryptocurrencies directly from their accounts. This new feature is rolling out to all U.S. businesses outside of New York.
“Business owners are increasingly expressing a desire for cryptocurrency features offered to consumers,” said Jose Fernandez da Ponte, PayPal’s senior vice president of blockchain, bitcoin and digital currencies, in a statement about the announcement. “We are pleased to offer this new option as it will help our customers meet their needs by making their interactions with digital currencies easier.”
In addition to trading capabilities, businesses will also have the option to transfer their digital assets to external wallets or more secure storage solutions, providing flexibility in crypto asset management. PayPal’s entry into the cryptocurrency market accelerated with the announcement of the PYUSD stablecoin, which is 1:1 exchangeable with the US dollar, in August 2023. Initially launched with the support of Paxos, PYUSD was eventually integrated into the Solana network. Solana’s low transaction fees, typically less than $0.0025, make it an attractive alternative to higher-fee networks like Ethereum for small daily expenses.
Additionally, PayPal has also enabled private PYUSD transactions on Solana, ensuring transaction compliance while payment amounts remain private.
Despite PYUSD’s rapid growth, it lags far behind rivals like Tether and Circle, with a market cap of $1 billion. As of August 2024, Tether’s market cap is expected to reach $118 billion, while Circle’s stablecoin is valued at $35 billion.
