The link in the posts redirected to a fake AI site that asked you to connect your e-wallet. Have you ever been a victim of such a scam?

A major hack recently hit OpenAI, one of the leaders in artificial intelligence. The Twitter account of its newsroom was hijacked by a malicious individual who used the identity of the company to promote a fake cryptocurrency.

Fake OpenAI Token to Steal Bitcoins

The fraudster used the account to spread enticing messages about a supposed OpenAI token, which he presented as being “driven by artificial intelligence language models.” In reality, the cryptocurrency was nothing more than a vast scam designed to steal Bitcoin. Potential victims were then redirected to a very convincing fake website called “token-openai.com.” Once on this site, any click by the user resulted in a request to connect to their digital wallet, allowing the hacker to completely drain their funds.

OpenAI's reaction

The series of fraudulent posts remained visible for about an hour before being removed. OpenAI confirmed the issue and told Bloomberg it was investigating. The company’s security team warned employees yesterday about a recent increase in account takeovers.

A recurring threat

This incident follows a series of similar hacks targeting three key OpenAI employee accounts over the past 15 months, including that of CTO Mira Murati. It underscores the need for all social media users to regularly strengthen their security measures.
