The Crusaders Defeated by the Turks at Nicopolis
On September 25, 1396, the Ottoman Sultan defeated a large army of knights at Nicopolis, on the Danube.
These knights had come from all over the West to rescue King Sigismund of Hungary and the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Palaeologus.
Their defeat buried the idea of ââa crusade forever.
