Celestia Foundation raised $100 million led by Bain Capital Crypto with contributions from investors including Syncracy Capital, 1kx, Robot Ventures, and Placeholder.
According to the announcement made on September 23, the funding brings Celestia’s total raised to $155 million following its launch as one of the modular data availability layer protocols.
This initiative aims to develop solutions to scalability and data availability, which are among the biggest challenges of blockchain networks.
Celestia, due in 2023, will separate the architecture, consensus, and data availability layers from the execution layer, allowing developers to build layer-2 aggregations with greater flexibility than traditional monolithic chains like Ethereum.
Traditional blockchains limit flexibility and compromise performance by handling data, transactions, and security in a single layer. Celestia is emerging as an alternative to this situation.
The developers committed to scaling the block size to 1 gigabyte in a roadmap they announced in early September. They said the upgrade could increase Celestia’s network capacity to surpass Visa’s and enable it to process many more transactions per second. Celestia isn’t the only project offering a solution in the data availability space; other initiatives like EigenLayer’s EigenDA and Polygon’s Avail are also working in this space.
Since May, Celestia has been steadily gaining market share from Ethereum, increasing its share from 20 percent at the beginning to nearly 40 percent by the end of July.
