The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute has turned to artificial intelligence and machine learning to search for signs of aliens, Decrypt reports.

"The amount of data we generate is growing exponentially every year, and you just can't handle it with traditional analysis. AI and machine learning are being used a lot, increasingly in SETI, but also in other areas of science that we do," said CEO Bill Diamond.

The AI is ingesting data from the Very Large Array in New Mexico at a rate of about three terabytes per second. Scientists are training the systems to respond to signals that look unnatural and have certain distinctive characteristics.
