Shape for Creators: The New Ethereum L2

What you need to know about Shape - the upcoming L2 for creators.

Built by the developers of the Deca NFT curation platform, Shape is a new Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network designed for creators that is preparing to officially launch its mainnet on Monday, September 30.

Why it matters

As the newest member of the Optimism Superchain ecosystem, Shape is an L2 built on OP Stack technology and is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which makes using and developing on Shape as easy as on Ethereum.

To win the favor of creators, Shape implemented a Gasback program natively on its chain.

This feature allows smart contract owners to reclaim 80% of sorter fees — fees paid by users for sorting and packaging L2 transactions when interacting with contracts — thereby enabling creators and applications to share in the success of the network.

What to expect

Several projects have announced that they will provide support for Shape’s L2 mainnet when it goes live on September 30.

For example, NFT creator and collection platform Highlight will provide full indexing and market support for Shape's NFTs, and custom NFT smart contract platform Transient Labs is also integrating the L2. In addition, the stablecoin USDC will also be launched on Shape.

In addition, the Shape Rotation event is scheduled to start on September 30. At that time, more than 40 well-known NFT collectors will launch a collection event with a total amount of US$250,000 on Shape NFT, and the Shape team will match another US$250,000 for all purchases.

Try Shape before mainnet launch

Shape’s testnet is currently live, so it’s possible to experience this L2 in advance before it attracts widespread attention.

For example, DIY contract platform thirdweb was one of the early supporters of the Shape Sepolia testnet. You can use the platform’s Shape faucet to claim 0.01 testnet ETH (once every 24 hours, subject to supply).

If you want to try creating your own testnet NFT release, you can log in to the thirdweb main panel and select the "Ready to Deploy" option in the "Deployment" tab in the "Contracts" section.

Then select "NFT Drop", click "Deploy Now", customize your test minting as needed, and select "Shape Sepolia Testnet" as the deployment chain before confirming the deployment transaction. If you need to add the testnet to your wallet, you can add the network information in the wallet's settings.

The Big Picture

The main art-focused L2 currently active is Zora Network, which has become a popular choice for creators in the Ethereum ecosystem this year. That being said, there is still plenty of room for other visions to surface, and Shape is trying to do just that through its Gasback incentive program for users.

It’s not clear if the Gasback feature will be enough to make Shape a serious challenger to the Zora Network. But well-known artists like XCOPY have already shown interest in Shape’s launch, so if this L2 can continue to attract this kind of attention, it has the potential to become a new and important center in the crypto creative space. Stay tuned for updates.
