In a major win for online detectives and cryptocurrency researchers, authorities have arrested two men in Los Angeles and Miami in connection with a $243 million crypto theft that occurred last month.
The arrests were the result of an intensive weeks-long investigation led by renowned crypto researcher ZachXBT and supported by the Binance Security Team and other crypto forensics experts. The theft targeted a creditor of cryptocurrency exchange Genesis via a sophisticated social engineering attack on August 19, 2024. Criminals Greavys (Malone Iam), Wiz (Veer Chetal), and Box (Jeandiel Serrano) used a variety of sophisticated techniques to steal the victim’s funds.
Initially attempting to compromise personal accounts by posing as Google Support, these individuals then impersonated Gemini exchange support to convince the victim that their account had been stolen. Using tactics such as tricking the victim into resetting two-factor authentication (2FA) and sharing their private keys via AnyDesk remote access software, the thieves transferred $243 million from the victim’s account to compromised wallets.
In a statement by ZachXBT, it was stated that the stolen funds were quickly distributed among many wallets and exchanges and converted into various cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and Monero. Despite the criminals’ efforts to cover their tracks, it turned out that they made some critical mistakes. Veer Chetal, known as “Wiz,” accidentally revealed his identity during a screen sharing session, which led investigators to link him to the crime. Similarly, his partner “Light/Dark” (Aakaash), who helped launder funds through eXch and Thorswap, also leaked his personal information during a similar session.
One of the ringleaders, Malone Iam, known as “Greavys,” spent the stolen money flaunting luxury items such as cars, jewelry and Birkin bags. His social media posts played a key role in documenting his lavish lifestyle. Investigators used open-source intelligence (OSINT) to track his movements between Los Angeles and Miami, finding he frequented nightclubs and luxury venues and spent up to $500,000 per night.
ZachXBT and crypto forensics researcher zeroShadow have worked hard to track down the funds and identify the criminals. Thanks to blockchain analysis, the team was able to freeze more than $9 million in stolen funds and return $500,000 to the victim. The investigation resulted in the arrests of Greavys and Box. Law enforcement is expected to seize additional funds from the suspects’ accounts following significant transfers made during the arrests. ZachXBT noted that while most of the stolen money was converted to Monero (XMR), known for its privacy features, there were some errors that allowed investigators to link the laundered funds to the stolen assets.
More arrests and fund recovery are expected as authorities continue to pursue other suspects involved in the incident, including Danny Trauma (Danish) and other accomplices.
