Wu said that the chain detective ZachXBT revealed a social engineering attack of up to $243 million. Three suspects successfully stole the crypto assets of a Genesis creditor through an elaborate multi-step scam. It is reported that the incident occurred on August 19, 2024. The suspects first impersonated Google support staff to obtain the victim's personal account, and then impersonated Gemini support staff to induce the victim to reset two-factor authentication (2FA) and transfer the Bitcoin in the Gemini account to the wallet controlled by the suspect. The suspects also shared the screen through AnyDesk to obtain the victim's private key and steal his Bitcoin. The 4,064 Bitcoins involved in the theft were quickly dispersed to more than 15 exchanges after the theft and converted into Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum and Monero. Finally, with the cooperation of multiple investigative agencies and the Binance security team, the suspects' assets of more than $9 million were successfully frozen, of which more than $500,000 have been returned to the victims. Currently, the two main suspects, Box and Greavys, have been arrested in Miami and Los Angeles. The case is still under further investigation and more funds are expected to be seized.
