Second Trump Assassination Attempt Causes Bitcoin to Fall

Former President Donald Trump faces a second assassination attempt on September 15. The Republican presidential candidate was playing golf at his West Palm Beach course when the incident occurred. The suspect was arrested and Trump was unharmed. However, the assassination attempt sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, causing BTC to plummet.

Shots rang out

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. ET. Secret Service agents spotted a man armed with an AK-47-style rifle hiding in the bushes near the property. The agents opened fire, which caused the suspect to flee in his black SUV. Authorities found two backpacks and a GoPro camera near a fence along with the rifle. The suspect was later identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh. He fled, but didn’t get far. A quick-thinking witness snapped a photo of his license plate. This helped police find and arrest him on Interstate 95.

Bitcoin is failing

The news of the assassination attempt shook not only the political world, but also the cryptocurrency market. The price of Bitcoin fell by about 3% from $60,313 to $58,627.

The drop triggered a wave of liquidations totaling $116.52 million, the bulk of which ($106.52 million) were long trades. The market chaos has intensified over the past 24 hours, with liquidations affecting 49,351 traders.

Trump's stance on making the US a cryptocurrency hub has been the reason for this sharp decline, with many in the crypto community expecting him to create better regulation and a more favorable environment for the space.

The authorities' reaction

The FBI is treating the incident as an “attempted murder.” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas praised the Secret Service’s quick action, saying it likely prevented a major tragedy. He stressed that protecting the presidential candidates remains a top priority.

I commend the Secret Service for its swift action to prevent this apparent assassination attempt and protect the former president. We condemn violence against public servants and candidates. (1/2)
