The FBI says it is investigating an incident involving a shooter at former U.S. President Donald Trump's Florida golf course as an apparent "assassination attempt."

Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, said he was "safe and well" after shots were fired near him in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Law enforcement officials say officers spotted a gunman with a rifle on the golf course, shot him and eventually arrested him after he tried to flee.

U.S. President Joe Biden said he and Vice President Kamala Harris are "relieved" that Trump was not injured in the incident, as politicians across the country condemn political violence.

A gunman was seen near the golf course near Trump, according to law enforcement officials. A Secret Service agent shot the man, who fled in a vehicle and was later arrested.

U.S. media outlets identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh. It was not immediately clear whether he fired any shots.

The incident comes just two months after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally.
