It was learned that Gary Gensler, the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who has become persona non grata in the crypto industry, has received death threats.

Newly released documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) show that U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler received frequent death threats.

According to Bloomberg, one of these threats was in April 2022. An anonymous person vowed to find and shoot Gensler, whose decisions have been widely criticized in the crypto industry. This person, who called the institution, said, “I hope you all come out the door with guards, because your heads need to be cut off. I will shoot you. Gary, you are doomed. You will be killed, Gary. If I don’t kill you, someone else will.” The person, whose identity was identified, was taken into custody by Florida law enforcement and brought to court and pleaded guilty.

Shortly after this incident, Gensler received another threat. This time, the call was made by a public official. It was learned that the official worked for Customs and Border Protection, a law enforcement agency in the United States. Six months later, Gensler received threatening emails for several days. The subject of one of these emails was “Die.” The investigation determined that the person lived in Australia. The prosecutor’s office decided not to prosecute and closed the case.

Gensler took over as SEC chairman in April 2021. The crypto industry initially welcomed Gensler’s chairmanship due to his expertise in Bitcoin and blockchain technology and his teaching of courses on the subject at MIT, but things didn’t go as expected. Gensler clamped down on the crypto industry. Under his chairmanship, the SEC filed lawsuits against many exchanges and crypto projects, imposing billions of dollars in fines. Gensler, who became persona non grata due to his hostile attitude towards crypto, was also promised to be removed from office in the US election race. US presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that he would fire Gensler as soon as he took office.
