Ripple is a real-time gross settlement system that also supports fiat money, cryptocurrencies, and commodity and remittance exchange. The platform's native cryptocurrencies are Ripples, abbreviated as XRP. Ripple was created by the Ripple company, but it can work without it due to its shared ledger. Used by companies such as UniCredit, UBS and Santander, Ripple has been increasingly adopted by banks and payment networks as a settlement infrastructure technology due to the speed of payments within the network, stability of the technology and the ability to coin serve as a bridge. There were 100 billion XRP created at the beginning of Ripple, which is the coin's limit according to the protocol's rules. Of the 100 billion created, 20 billion XRP was retained by the creators and the remaining 80% was given to Ripple Labs for sale.
