According to Cointelegraph, Vitalik Buterin said that the biggest criticism of X’s community notes is that they don’t appear fast enough.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes that artificial intelligence and prediction market technology can accelerate the generation of community notes on social media platform X.

Community Notes is a feature of X that allows users to add context to potentially misleading posts. Contributors can leave a "note" on a post, and if enough contributors rate the note as helpful, it will be publicly displayed below the post.

At Korea Blockchain Week 2024, Buterin said that while the notes are helpful, the biggest criticism of community notes is that they “don’t appear fast enough” and that people can be misled before the notes appear.

Prediction markets could speed up other mechanisms Buterin added that any delay required to provide context for posts via community notes would be “excessive.” However, the Ethereum co-founder believes that the solution may lie in prediction markets.

Prediction markets are open markets that allow users to bet on specific outcomes. Buterin cited the example of decentralized prediction platform Polymarket, where people bet on highly controversial topics such as politics, sports and crypto. Buterin said:

“You can think of prediction markets as a building block that can make other mechanisms faster. … You take some existing mechanism and you make a faster mechanism that incentivizes it to do the best job possible.”

He said that whenever a post is published, a question could be asked to determine whether a community note is needed. Buterin said people could bet small amounts of money on this prediction market using large AI language models and bots.

Buterin believes this has the potential to speed up the process of obtaining the truth and incentivize participants.

“The mechanism is that it puts the notes at the end and then it rewards people who predict the outcome correctly, right? So here, you basically have a vector that’s cheap but fast,” he explained.
