The United Arab Emirates has halted a $19 billion contract with France to buy 80 Rafale fighter jets following the arrest of Durov, the chief executive of Telegram. Durov, who is a UAE citizen, was detained at Paris-Le Bourget airport on Saturday on allegations of money laundering and drug trafficking linked to his messaging app.

The UAE Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the case and is requesting diplomatic access, which could lead to tensions between the two countries.

UAE seeks consular assistance for Durov

The UAE has asked France to provide immediate legal assistance to Durov. The Foreign Office said that “caring for citizens and protecting their interests is a top priority.” The decision to suspend the contract to purchase military aircraft shows the UAE’s concern about the treatment of Durov, who also has citizenships of France, Russia and St Kitts and Nevis.

French President Emmanuel Macron defended the arrest, saying it was based on a personal investigation and was not politically motivated. He said the country is committed to freedom of expression, while stressing that rights must be governed by law. The pause in the fighter jet contract could affect military cooperation between the two countries, which includes the UAE's use of French-made equipment.

Russia opposes Durov's arrest

Russia has expressed deep concern about the arrest and criticised it as politically motivated. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said relations with France were now at their "lowest" since the arrest. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that without clear evidence, the accusations could appear to be an attempt to limit freedom of communication.

Telegram has backed Durov, saying he has “nothing to hide” and that the company complies with all EU laws. It has also insisted that its moderation policies meet industry standards and denied any involvement in criminal activity.

Investigation continues in France

Durov remains in custody in France as the investigation continues. He is accused of enabling illegal activities such as money laundering and drug trafficking on his platform. Under French law, he can be held for up to four days before judges decide whether to press charges or release him.

The Paris prosecutor's office extended the detention for 48 hours, but has not yet filed formal charges. Meanwhile, Russia is demanding clearer details from the French authorities, expressing concern about the lack of specific reasons for the arrest.
