The United Arab Emirates  has stopped a $19 B contract with France to buy 80 Rafale fighter jets after the arrest of Durov, the CEO of Telegram. Durov, who is a citizen of the UAE, was held at Paris-Le Bourget Airport on Saturday over claims involving money laundering and drug trafficking linked to his messaging app.

The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely watching the case and is asking for diplomatic access, which could lead to tensions between the two countries.

UAE Seeks Consular Help for Durov

The Emirates has asked France to provide immediate legal assistance for Durov. The Office of Foreign Affairs stated that "caring for citizens and protecting their interests is a top priority." The decision to suspend the military jet deal shows the UAE’s concern over the treatment of Durov, who also holds citizenships in France, Russia, and St. Kitts and Nevis.

France President Emmanuel Macron defended the arrest, stating it was based on a personal inquiry and was not politically driven. He said that the country is committed to freedom of expression while emphasising that rights must follow the law. The pause on the fighter jet contract might affect army cooperation between the two countries, which includes the UAE’s use of French-built equipment.

Russia has voiced strong concerns over the arrest, criticising it as potentially having political motives. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that relations with France are now at their "lowest" point since the arrest. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that without clear evidence, the charges might seem like an effort to limit communication freedom.

Telegram has supported Durov, saying he "has nothing to hide" and that the company follows all European Union laws. It further insisted that its moderation policies meet industry standards and denied any involvement in criminal activities.

Investigation in France Continues

Durov is still in police custody in France while the investigation continues. He is accused of allowing illegal activities like cash laundering and substance dealing on his platform. Under French law, he can be held for up to four days before justices decide whether to bring charges or release him.

The Paris prosecutor’s office extended his arrest by 48 hours but has not yet filed formal charges. Meanwhile, Russia demands clearer details from French officials, showing its concerns over the lack of specific reasons for the arrest.
