In the past week, Blockchain platform Polygon raised awareness about the breach of its community Discord channel. The seriousness of the attack became more apparent when a user, ValidatorK, shared that he lost $150,000 worth of Ethereum (ETH) from his pool after engaging with links posted on the chat channel.

In an X post, Mudit Gupta, Polygon’s Chief Information Officer, advised users to refrain from clicking on any links shared in the Discord channel until the issue is completely addressed. The breach happened just as Polygon’s proof-of-stake (PoS) network was getting ready to swap its initial MATIC token with the new POL (POL) token during an upgrade set for September 4.

Avalanche Discord Channel Compromised

About 48 hours after Polygon’s Discord was breached, Layer-1 blockchain platform Avalanche was reported to be affected by a similar exploit. The blockchain brought this to the attention of its community members and warned users not to engage with any links.

Bad actors were reportedly capitalizing on the situation, sharing deceptive links, and claiming a distribution scheme for the Avalanche. Speculation surrounding this was that fraudsters were trying to mislead users into thinking they could benefit from the recently launched Grayscale Avalanche Trust by clicking on the malicious links.

Nevertheless, Ben Well, Avalanche’s community lead, shared that prompt actions have been taken to address the situation swiftly. He added that the developers’ teams work effortlessly to reinstate the server’s functionality.

zkSync Discord Server Infiltrated by Hackers

zkSync’s Layer-2 blockchain, which recently launched ZK Nation to empower its community, reported that its official Discord server also experienced a breach. Once again, hackers were enticing users with free zkSync’s native token ZK in a supposed round 2 airdrop scheme. At the time of writing, zkSync has not addressed the issue officially, unlike Polygon and Avalanche, who swiftly addressed similar issues on X.

Why Fraudsters Target Crypto Discord Channels

Crypto discord channels serve as a communication hub for crypto communities to discuss crypto-related information and get insights on managing their digital assets. Bad actors now infiltrate these channels by spreading malicious links, luring individuals into fraudulent schemes due to their interactive nature to reach a wide audience quickly.

Discord breaches are classified as one of the many lucrative methods scammers use to target crypto traders. In July, the discord server of Ethena, an Ethereum synthetic dollar protocol, suffered an attack that caused its native token, ENA, to perform poorly in the digital market. Similarly, Mystern’s Lab Discord, and Bored Ape Yacht Club discord experienced the same fate in 2022.
