Polygon's Discord Channel Hacked; Admin Regains Control Amid Security Concerns
Polygon's community Discord channel was breached in a recent cyberattack, raising security concerns among users. The platform's administrators have regained control and are working to restore the channel to its original state.
Polygon Discord Breached—Admins Regain Control
Polygon's chief information security officer, Mudit Gupta, explained that the Discord channel had been compromised, warning users to avoid clicking on any shared links until the situation was fully resolved. Gupta provided an update, stating, "We have regained access and are currently cleaning up all changes made by the hackers to ensure they cannot return."
Despite the security breach, Gupta stressed that all privileged accounts had two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled. The incident highlights the vulnerability of Discord as a communication platform, especially for cryptocurrency communities where valuable information and assets are frequently discussed. Other notable cryptocurrency Discord server breaches include Ocean Protocol, Aura Network, Nahmii, and Metrixcoin.
Following the breach, several users reported significant losses, including one individual who claimed to have lost $150,000 in ethereum (ETH) after allegedly interacting with an official announcement on the channel. The breach led to a wave of users seeking support, only to be met with impersonators posing as legitimate Polygon admins, exacerbating the situation and intensifying calls for stronger security protocols on platforms like Discord.
