On August 22, Bitcoin transaction fees surged, reaching their highest level since June 7, 2024, when the average fee hit $83. On Thursday, on-chain transaction fees quietly climbed, surpassing $105 per transaction, or more than 1,250 satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB).

By 7 p.m., fees had dropped significantly, and at block 857,986, the F2pool company had earned just 0.03522003 BTC from on-chain transaction fees, equivalent to $2,128 at the current BTC rate.

Similarly, blocks 857,987 and 857,988 mined by Foundry brought in 0.05425859 BTC and 0.03077392 BTC, respectively. Meanwhile, as transaction fees skyrocketed to $105 per transaction, Bitcoin miners reaped huge profits from the surge in revenue.

Antpool and Foundry, the world's top two mining pools by hashrate, achieved the highest fees in consecutive blocks—857,911 and 857,912. Block 857,911 yielded 18.67 BTC, including 3.125 BTC from block subsidies and 15.55 BTC from transaction fees, totaling $1.12 million.

Foundry's block 857,912 made a strong impression, earning 12,158 BTC in transaction fees, bringing the total BTC received to 15,283 BTC, or $923,733. Not far behind, block 857,910 earned Antpool 9.51 BTC in fees, while block 857,913 added another 8.08 BTC. Notably, blocks 857,914 through 857,918 all had fees exceeding 1.33 BTC.

In addition to Antpool and Foundry, other lucky mining pools that benefited from the high fees included Viabtc, F2pool, and MARA Pool. The fees that exceeded 1 BTC were 28.2 times higher than the fees recorded at 7 p.m. the same day.

Immediately after block 857,918, Luxor earned 0.98 BTC, and Binance Pool received 1.096 BTC in transaction fees after discovering block 857,923. Data shows that from 9:00 AM on August 22 to 3:00 AM on August 23, the daily hash rate increased from $44 to $53 per petahash per second (PH/s).

This slight increase offered some hope to miners facing a challenging mining environment. However, the increase was short-lived, and transaction fees returned to pre-spike levels today.
