$4 Billion Cryptocurrency Scammer Caught in Istanbul

Andreas Szakacs, one of the co-founders of OmegaPro, was arrested in Turkey in July on charges of defrauding investors of $4 billion in a cryptocurrency pyramid scheme.

Szakacs, a Swedish citizen, changed his name to Emre Avcı after becoming a Turkish citizen. Szakacs denied the accusations and stated that he works in finance and marketing.

32 cold wallets were seized during the operation. Szakacs did not provide the passwords to the devices, but Turkish authorities managed to track $160 million in cryptocurrency movements.

This arrest was made after an anonymous tipster received information on June 28. Dutch citizen Abdul Ghaffar Mohaghegh claimed in his statement that he lost $7 million in this scam and that he had powers of attorney on behalf of 3,000 victimized investors who collectively lost $103 million.

Szakacs was arrested after raids on two villas in Beykoz, Istanbul on July 9

He denies the charges

According to BirGün's report, during the interrogation, he was asked, "Is there anyone you have escaped and hid from by changing your real name and surname?" Avcı said, "No, there is not. I changed it because it was my legal right."

Avcı also denied the fraud charges and said, "It was not established for fraud. The company went bankrupt around September, October 2022. We suffered the biggest loss. We covered the losses of many victims until we went bankrupt."
