Colombia’s Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) has accused decentralized identity project Worldcoin and the company behind it, Tools for Humanity, of alleged violations of personal data protection regulations. The SIC’s notice to Worldcoin contains a preliminary allegation of conduct, but no formal charges have been filed. The SIC detailed: “The purpose of this proceeding is to determine whether the investigated company has violated the Colombian personal data protection regime in the implementation of its personal data processing policies and privacy notices when collecting sensitive personal data.” If Worldcoin is found guilty, the SIC could impose financial sanctions, temporarily suspend operations (for a period of six months), or immediately and permanently shut down its operations. Different governments in Latin America have recently begun investigating Worldcoin’s actions. (CoinDesk)
