Odaily Planet Daily News Bitcoin mining company Greenidge Generation has filed a lawsuit against the New York State Environmental Protection Agency (DEC) against its decision to refuse to renew the Dresden power plant's Class V air permit. DEC rejected the application in June 2022 on the grounds that Greenidge did not comply with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Although Greenidge's appeal was dismissed in May 2024, the company was granted a four-month grace period, allowing it to continue operating under its existing permit until September 8. Greenidge believes that DEC's decision is "arbitrary and capricious" and interferes with the New York State Public Service Commission's jurisdiction over power generation facilities, ignoring the procedures of the New York Independent System Operator. The company further argued that the regulator's position to close the facility was based on its involvement in cryptocurrency mining, even though the facility also provides electricity to the grid. Greenidge also emphasized the facility's contribution to the state economy, including employment and tax revenue. If the DEC's decision is not revoked, Greenidge said it would be forced to close the facility by September 9. (CryptoSlate)
