The MEC approved a new distance learning technology course (EAD) focused on cryptocurrencies and blockchain, reflecting the growing importance of these technologies in the global economic and financial scenario.

The new course was developed by the University Center of the United Metropolitan Colleges (FMU), based in São Paulo.

It is worth noting that there is a strong demand for professionals trained in emerging areas of technology and digital finance. This is happening as the cryptocurrency market and applications of blockchain technology expand and become increasingly relevant to various industries.

MEC approves new cryptocurrency course in distance learning format

Signed by Marta Wendel Abramo, Secretary of Regulation and Supervision of Higher Education, “ORDINANCE SERES/MEC Nº 372, OF AUGUST 7, 2024” recognizes new higher education courses in the distance learning modality.

According to the new MEC ordinance, the FMU cryptocurrency and blockchain course will offer 200 places per year to those interested in the knowledge. The new offering of the technological course shows that students need only 5 semesters to complete the course, that is, 2.5 years.

In the course presentation, FMU highlights that the course aims to train professionals qualified in blockchain applications, cryptography, among others.

“The course is aimed at people interested in developing, expanding or formalizing professional skills in the field of the course. The market has been behaving positively in absorbing graduates of the course, who can occupy job positions in the public and private sectors, in the areas of cryptocurrencies, digital economy and the development and management of decentralized applications and data, data mining, knowledge of Bitcoin and Ethereum protocols, Cybersecurity, Web 3.0 and application of Blockchain technologies in real scenarios.”

Among the teachers are specialist professionals, masters and doctors, who seek to help students in the knowledge process.

Cryptocurrency courses in Brazil

Although for the Brazilian cryptocurrency market, the MEC's approval of yet another higher education option is very important, the market is still observing the expansion of educational offerings not only in higher education.

This is because, in 2022, USP received R$90,000 to promote a course on cryptocurrencies, in a technical format.

And as knowledge at higher and technical levels is still restricted, many private initiatives are taking the lead in training, such as Samsung, for example, which has already created several courses on the subject in Brazil.

In any case, Brazilian education still has a lot of room to work on blockchain and cryptocurrency topics, and the new approval by the MEC shows the sector's potential.
