Bank Staff Reassemble Shredded Banknotes to Save Family

In Kunming, Yunnan province of China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) undertook a remarkable task to restore over 100,000 pieces of cut banknotes, providing critical financial relief to a struggling family.

The crisis began when a woman, suffering from depression, cut her family's savings—32,000 yuan (approximately US$4,500)—into tiny pieces before her death. Her grieving widower and their four children faced financial despair. Zhang, the sister-in-law, sought help from multiple banks, but only ICBC accepted the challenge.

Four dedicated ICBC employees spent more than three weeks meticulously reassembling the fragments using magnifiers. Their effort successfully restored the banknotes, bringing much-needed relief to the family.

Zhang expressed her gratitude by presenting a custom silk banner to the ICBC staff. The story quickly spread on social media, earning widespread admiration for the bank’s extraordinary act of kindness and dedication. This incident highlights the profound impact of compassion and perseverance in the financial sector.
