The Shibarmy Scam Alerts channel, which alerts about cases of fraud, revealed a new and sophisticated tactic that attackers are using to empty the cryptocurrency wallets of potential victims.
Shibarmy Scam Alerts has warned that scammers are posting job advertisements on reputable platforms with high pay for various tasks. Applicants are required to download software related to the desired position. For example, if the “job” involves beta testing a game, the scammers will ask the applicant to download the game app.
However, when the software is downloaded, malware is secretly installed on the user's device. With its help, attackers can gain access to cryptocurrency wallet extensions, including MetaMask. This extension allows fraudsters to sign transactions and obtain victims' private keys without their knowledge. Fraudsters gain full access to victims’ crypto wallets.
Shibarmy Scam Alerts experts advised job seekers to be careful about any job offers and download software only from official platforms. For more reliable protection of crypto assets, security experts advised the use of hardware wallets. Shibarmy Scam Alerts also warned users not to share their seed phrases with anyone under any circumstances.
For those who may have already downloaded suspicious software, experts recommend removing it using a comprehensive anti-virus scan for malware. Victims should also remove and reinstall web browsers and extensions, and reconfigure crypto wallet extensions. It is better to create a new address and move the remaining funds from the compromised address to it. People should be wary of even services that promise to return crypto assets, as most of them are scam services.
Recently, cybersecurity engineer NFT_Dreww discovered that scammers stole $300,000 worth of cryptocurrencies by distributing malicious links purporting to lead to the Zoom platform.
