While U.S. Vice President Harris reportedly turned down a request to attend the Nashville Bitcoin Conference, people familiar with the matter revealed that Harris’ team had actually seriously considered an invitation, which is news in itself.

The party’s leaders have been relentlessly hostile to cryptocurrencies, but the fact that the Democratic nominee is “negotiating” to address the concerns of 30,000 Bitcoin holders reflects how much policy could change under Harris’ leadership.

The industry is now waiting to see whether Harris, who is relatively blank on crypto, can win back some of the crypto voters who pledged their support to Donald Trump because of his promise to be the “crypto president.” Meanwhile, some in her own party are already urging her to take a more favorable stance.

“Harris doesn’t have a lot of time to redefine herself, she only has a short time to say for sure that she is an independent,” an unnamed crypto lobbyist and former White House adviser told Fortune. He estimates that Harris will clarify her views on cryptocurrencies in the coming weeks.

Gary DeWaal, a former senior trial attorney at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), said he does not expect Harris to comment on cryptocurrencies until after she announces her vice president pick on Aug. 7. “That’s her priority right now,” he said.

First, when Biden became president, many of his economic advisors were former colleagues of staunch cryptocurrency critic and Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren. Harris does not have the same connections. The cryptocurrency lobbyist shared that Harris's technology advisors are considered pro-cryptocurrency and her husband Douglas Emhoff is a "crypto enthusiast." He added: "I expect she will change her position."

Harris’ more open stance toward cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology than Biden is consistent with her career representing California in the U.S. Senate, where she often advocated for Silicon Valley. During her time in public office, “[she] built great relationships with tech industry leaders,” DeWaal added. That included executives like Meta’s Sheryl Sandberg, with whom she developed a close relationship and earned a reputation as a pro-business politician.
