ChainCatcher reported that the Nigerian Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) fined Meta (formerly Facebook) $220 million for alleged violations of data privacy. The focus of the investigation is that Whatsapp LLC and Meta collected and used their data without user consent. The FCCPC stated that it imposed the fine in accordance with the Antitrust Law of 2018 and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection (Administrative Penalties) Regulations of 2020.

Meta plans to appeal the fine, object to the FCCPC's claims, and emphasize its commitment to user data protection.
