US Republican presidential candidate Trump has chosen Vance, a rising star who once sharply criticized him and is now his strongest supporter, as his running mate.

According to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg, two days after Trump was nearly assassinated, he announced on his social media platform Truth Social that Republican Ohio Senator JD Vance was his vice presidential candidate.

Trump said: "After careful consideration and considering many other excellent candidates, I have determined that the most suitable person to serve as the vice president of the United States is Senator Vance from the great state of Ohio."

Trump and Vance were formally nominated as the Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates at the Republican National Convention, which opened in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Monday (July 15).
