The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) recently released its latest âDigital Economy Report 2024â (hereinafter referred to as âReportâ). The report states that although digitalization has boosted global economic growth and brought special opportunities to developing countries, the impact on the environment is also becoming increasingly serious. The report shows that new technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, 5G and the Internet of Things continuously increase the need for data transmission, processing and storage, which also increases greenhouse gas emissions. Global energy consumption generated by Bitcoin "mining" increased approximately 34-fold between 2015 and 2023.
