Various governments around the world hold significant amounts of cryptocurrency, often obtained through legal proceedings, confiscations and seizures, according to Arkham data. Major Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) assets stand out as the main components of these portfolios, with total market capitalizations reaching billions of dollars.
The US and German governments have criticized their recent Bitcoin sales and Mt. Gox refund payments caused significant declines in the market. For example, the US government owns approximately 213,297 BTC, and the market value of these assets is around $12.21 billion. These Bitcoins are often obtained as a result of legal seizures related to criminal cases.
The UK comes in behind the US and holds around $3.3 billion worth of Bitcoin. Similarly, Germany holds approximately 41,226 BTC, or approximately $2.28 billion worth of Bitcoin. These important assets were mostly obtained as a result of legal confiscation.
El Salvador, on the other hand, takes a different approach from other countries and continues to acquire Bitcoin under its national BTC strategy. The country currently holds 5,802 BTC worth approximately $321 million. El Salvador's proactive purchasing strategy supports a unique national financial strategy, in sharp contrast to the sales seen in other countries.
